Having been stored in damp conditions, the barrel was in very poor condition externally exhibiting heavy corrosion. At some point in the past an attempt had been made to remove this, which had resulted in the bluing being destroyed, then more corrosion had occurred.

This was stripped right back, corrosion removed, fine grade wet and dry used to establish a decent surface, 1000 grade wet and dry, and then the polishing wheel used to bring a good level of finish, prior to degreasing and application of cold blue for a satisfactory finish that matches the remainder of the action.
